For a long time, I treated every stall in growth as a problem to be solved. A plant that stopped putting out new leaves, stopped plumping up, stopped doing anything visible at all, felt like a plant that needed intervention, more water, more light, maybe a feed to nudge it back into motion. It took losing a genuinely beautiful Lithops, one I’d nursed through its first year without issue, before I understood that some of those “stalled” periods weren’t problems at all. They were dormancy, and my well-intentioned intervention was exactly what killed it.
Dormancy is one of the most misunderstood aspects of growing rare succulents, partly because the word itself suggests something closer to sleep than what’s actually happening physiologically, and partly because so much generic succulent advice assumes a single, simplified growth pattern that doesn’t apply to most of the genuinely interesting species collectors chase. Understanding dormancy, recognizing it, respecting it, and adjusting care around it, is one of the more important skills that separates people who keep rare succulents alive long-term from people who lose them slowly to well-meaning overcare.
What Dormancy Actually Is
Dormancy is a period of significantly reduced metabolic activity that many succulents enter in response to seasonal conditions, most commonly extreme heat or cold, depending on the species’ native climate. During this period, a plant isn’t dead, isn’t necessarily even fully static, but it’s operating at a fraction of its normal metabolic rate. Root activity slows. Water uptake slows dramatically. New growth either stops entirely or continues at a barely perceptible pace. Some species shed leaves as part of this process. Others simply sit, visually unchanged, for months at a time.
The purpose is survival. In their native habitats, many succulents evolved to endure a predictable period each year where conditions are hostile enough that active growth would be wasteful or outright dangerous, scorching summer heat in some regions, freezing winter temperatures in others. Rather than fight those conditions, the plant essentially powers down, conserving resources until conditions improve enough to resume growth safely.
This is different from the kind of general slow growth associated with age or species. A mature, slow-growing Haworthia isn’t dormant just because it adds new leaves gradually year-round. Dormancy is a distinct, seasonal shift, and recognizing when a plant has entered it changes what kind of care is actually appropriate.
Why Misreading Dormancy Causes So Much Damage
The core danger of misunderstanding dormancy is that the instinct to help a “struggling” plant is almost always the wrong instinct during this period. A dormant succulent with reduced root activity can’t process water the way it does during active growth. Watering on a normal schedule, the kind I’ve described for slow-growing rare varieties during their growing season, during a dormancy period is one of the most common ways collectors lose plants that otherwise looked perfectly healthy going into the season. The water simply sits, the roots can’t take it up fast enough, and rot sets in quietly, often not becoming visible until real damage has already occurred.

Dormancy adds another layer of complexity to that diagnosis, because a plant that looks slightly shriveled or subdued during dormancy might actually be behaving completely normally for its current metabolic state, not signaling thirst at all. Responding to that appearance with extra water is often the exact mistake that turns a normal dormancy period into a rot emergency.
Fertilizer is another area where dormancy misunderstanding causes damage. Feeding a plant during dormancy, hoping to encourage it back into growth, accomplishes essentially nothing useful and can actively stress root systems that aren’t equipped to process nutrients at that reduced metabolic rate. Summer Dormancy vs. Winter Dormancy
Not all succulents go dormant at the same time of year, which is where a lot of collector confusion originates. Broadly, species fall into two dormancy patterns. Summer dormant species, many Echeverias, Aeoniums, and various South African natives among them, slow down during the hottest months and resume active growth in cooler weather. Winter dormant species, including many cold-hardy succulents and certain cacti, do the opposite, going quiet during cold months and growing actively through spring and summer.
This is part of why generic, one-size-fits-all care guides fail rare succulent collectors so often. A watering and feeding schedule that’s correct for a winter-grower during summer would be actively harmful applied to a summer-dormant species during the same months. Knowing which pattern each individual plant in your collection follows, rather than assuming a universal succulent calendar, is genuinely foundational knowledge, arguably more important than most single care variable on its own.
Recognizing Dormancy in Practice
Dormancy usually announces itself through a combination of subtle signs rather than one obvious signal. Growth essentially stops, even under conditions that would normally support it. Leaves may take on a slightly duller, less plump appearance without showing any of the sharper warning signs associated with actual stress, no unusual softness, no discoloration patterns consistent with disease. The plant, in short, looks like it’s simply pausing rather than declining.
Seasonal timing is the most reliable clue. A plant that stalls predictably around the same time each year, particularly if that timing lines up with known dormancy patterns for its genus, is very likely following a normal seasonal rhythm rather than experiencing a genuine problem. Cross-referencing with known species behavior, rather than assuming every stall requires troubleshooting, saves a lot of unnecessary intervention.
Caring for a Dormant Succulent
The right approach during dormancy is almost always to do less. Reduce watering significantly, often to a bare minimum just to prevent complete desiccation rather than to support active growth. Hold off on fertilizer entirely. Maintain stable light and temperature conditions rather than making major adjustments, since dormant plants are often more sensitive to sudden environmental shifts than actively growing ones, not less.
Patience is really the core skill here. Watching an expensive, rare specimen sit apparently unchanged for months can feel uncomfortable, especially for newer collectors used to visible progress as reassurance that care is working. But for a genuinely healthy succulent following its natural dormancy pattern, that stillness isn’t a warning sign. It’s exactly what a well-cared-for plant is supposed to do.
